A Community Hub in the Making

The Old Schoolhouse in Inverasdale, Scotland, has been a cornerstone of the Wester Loch Ewe community since its establishment in 1876. After serving as a primary school for 136 years, it closed its doors in 2012 due to declining enrolment. However, its story didn’t end there.

Recognising the building’s potential as a vital community asset, local residents came together in 2015 to form the Wester Loch Ewe Trust (WLET), a charitable organisation dedicated to managing community land and assets for public benefit. Since then, WLET has been working hard to breathe new life into the Old Schoolhouse, ensuring it continues to serve the community in meaningful ways.

Phase 1: A New Beginning
The first stage of the Old Schoolhouse’s transformation focused on renovating one half of the building, creating a welcoming tearoom, community café space, catering kitchen, and small meeting room. These facilities have become a thriving hub for local events, gatherings, and initiatives, including the much-loved tearoom, which is open every Wednesday from 2–4 PM, serving homemade cakes, tea, and coffee in a warm and friendly setting.
Thanks to the support of volunteers, visitors, and donors, the tearoom and event space have already proven to be valuable assets, providing a space for people to connect, share, and support community projects.

Phase 2: Bringing the Whole Building to Life
With Phase 1 successfully completed, we are now embarking on Phase 2, an ambitious project to restore and repurpose the former school side of the building. Our vision is to create a fully functional, multi-purpose community facility that not only serves as a space for local groups, events, and workshops but also generates income to support community projects in the area.
By upgrading and modernising the remaining section of the building, we aim to maximise its potential, ensuring it remains a sustainable and self-sufficient hub for generations to come. To secure the funding needed for these renovations, we must demonstrate the community’s ongoing use and demand for the space—which is why we’re currently offering reduced hire rates for the next six months to encourage more bookings.
